New painting

This is going to be an Acrylic on box canvas 12 x 16 ins. I have painted a similar painting in the past, see 1st. image. I have penciled in the new picture. I‘m going to use a slightly different background for this one as the customer likes the Yorkshire Moors.

Just a quick note about my new picture.

This picture is based on Cheapside Knaresborough, I have shown the picture at different stages of painting. I have not finished the painting yet but will include a finished photo of the picture later. There are about 9 images to put up. They are A1 - A9 and I will detail each stage. Just added a new image, I think it’s a bit out of focus. The picture is nearly finished now. I have the edges of the box canvas to paint. The software does not allow me to post a full image, at the stages of painting.

I have included a full image on the final post.

I feel as if the picture has got a little dark, I’m going to add some lighter tones!

I have now finished the picture, see the large image now in focus! I have also fixed my camera taking out-of-focus pictures! The picture is 20 x30 ins Titled Cheapside Knaresborough. Painted in Acrylic.

Title MORE WINE ref SN 0408

This painting is an acrylic on 12 x 16 box canvas. As you can see I have tried to reduce the hard edges on the bottles in the back ground ,while keeping a bit of detail. Layout of picture ie drawing was kept to a minimum using a small brush.

Shambles York SN 0398

These 5 pictures are an attempt at showing an approach to a textural finish using acrylic paint. I wanted an old shabby look to the painting. There should have been 6 images but I lost the first one. All it was was a drawing of the Shambles blocked in with Gouache ( my new blocking method) I mixed a solution of modeling paste and heavy structure gel. I applied it to the first picture, laying it on thick and without too much attention to detail.

I let it dry overnight, and then blocked it in with acrylic paint, let that dry. I then added more paint and some cast shadows, and more detail. The final picture I painted in a few people and strengthened the colours where necessary. My impression is, it’s not bad, I think the thicking agent could be used better on a different style of the subject. I have included an image of a little detail. I’m now preparing another painting in this style using Texture paste. I have used texture paste in the past see SN 0147 Staithes Townscapes Galleries.

Venice Grand Canal SN 0266

This painting is another example of painting a picture and try to ignore a lot of detail and go for the overall effect. I used the minimum of drawing. I painted the main image by adding bits of paint to show some detail. I then merged some of the edges to effect an out-of-focus image. Then in certain sections added some detail.

Title Cocktail Night. Ref. SN 0199

This picture is an oil on canvas 12 x 16 ins.. I took the photo from the OXO building on the Thames (London) The light was fading and my phone was pixalating, but I liked the effect so I painted it. As you can see my quest to not paint all the detail but still retain the image is apparant.

Title Parga Cottages Greece Ref. SN 0354

I painted this in Parga a few years ago. I always take my paints with me I used W/N watercolours for this painting on quality watercolour paper. When painting outdoors I spend more talking to the gathering crowd so usually finish the painting off indoors. This is a small watercolour 7 x 10 ins prints are available.

Title Ripon Ref. 0370

I saw this poster/photo of Ripon I thought one day I will paint this. I think it is circa 1900 I did write to Ripon authorities but didn’t get any response. I kept the picture in monochrome but added a little yellow just to warm up the chap on his carriage waiting for his ride. It’s an acrylic on panel 20 x 20 ins.

Title Ludgate Hill London SN 0415

I want to show one of the hardest painting techniques I have come across. That is to reduce the detail in a picture but still retain some or a lot of the aspect of the subject, so it is recognisable. The example painting will show what I mean. I’m still perfecting the technique, and the more I paint the better I think I get at it. The painting in acrylics is one of my earlier attempts. See what you think?

Title Flaming Gin SN0405

This is the picture mentioned in the previous picture SN 0397, I took the photo several years ago thinking I’ll paint that one day. I wanted a textural effect and used a pallet knife and other applicators. The Bottles are intended to be wobbly. It is an acrylic on box canvas.

Title CHEERS ref. SN 0397

It all started with a picture I took in a Pub a few years ago of a group of Gin bottles with candles in. I wanted to make the picture a lot loser so used a pallet knife, and various other implements. I did very little drawing only used a brush to sketch out the outline. It is shown in my still life gallery. Original acrylic on box canvas 20 x 30 ins.

Venice Painting

I have done several pictures using the following methods.

  1. Draw a basic picture, 2. Secure pencil drawing, 3 Block in drawing with a paintbrush, Complete painting with a pallet knife. This is the different bit. I usually do the sky first, but on this occasion, I’m going to paint the sky last, as the painting texture will be quiet thick. I will lose the freedom of painting the sky, and water. I intend to put some boats in the foreground not drawn in yet.

I will be using a pallet knife for the sky, and water plus reflections. I have included a pencil drawing.

  2. The painting is on box canvas 30 x 24 ins, and I’m using acrylic paints.
